Greek-Australians Bring Greek Cuisine to Japan

the apollo tokyoThe Apollo is an award winning modern Greek restaurant from Sydney Australia that has found itself a new home and new patrons in Tokyo Plaza Ginza.

In spring of 2016, Sydney restaurateurs Jonathan Barthelmess and Sam Christie, both of Greek heritage, announced the opening of The Apollo Tokyo.

Every detail has been carefully looked after in creating a Greek menu and authentic yet adapted atmosphere.

George Livissianis, the acclaimed Sydney interior designer who is responsible for some of Australia’s most beautiful and successful restaurant interiors including The Apollo restaurant in Potts Point, Australia, was recruited to recreate his masterpiece in Tokyo.

The location for The Apollo is on the top floor of the 11-story retail space Tokyu Plaza Ginza and offers its diners amazing views of the city.

Barthelmess has spent the past six weeks opening the restaurant with an all-Japanese kitchen crew, down to head chef Jun Kanazawa.

Although the menu is quite similar to that of the Australian location, there are some changes that had to be made such as using a charcoal grill instead of a wood-fire grill due to building safety code regulations not allowing the burning of wood. Also, the menu includes the addition of a local favorite, Japanese hide wagyu beef. Otherwise, the typical Greek cuisine can be expected.
