Greece inaugurated a General Consulate in the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, Erbil, on May 13.

An Office of Commercial Affairs already operated in Erbil. The office appertained to the Consulate of Greece in Baghdad, and aimed to promote commercial and financial co-operation with Iraqi Kurdistan.

By inaugurating the new office, with the initiative of Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Kotzias, Athens is upgrading its diplomatic presence in the region and especially in the relations with Kurdistan, during a period of fortification of the peripheral role.

Greece’s intentions to approach the Kurdish side was expressed last October, when representatives of Iraqi Kurdistan were invited and participated in the International Summit in Athens for the religious pluralism in the Middle East.

The new General Consulate in Erbil appertains to the Greek Consulate in Baghdad.
