Greek Diplomat Killed in Train Accident in Thailand

thailand-greek-diplomat1A Greek diplomat was killed during a horrific accident, when she fell from a moving train in Sai Yok district of Kanchanaburi province, Thailand, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the police report, the 30-year-old woman was identified as Aristea Liapi. She used to work as a secretary at the Greek Embassy in Bangkok.

Liapi was on family vacation, visiting a popular Thai tourist region known for inspiring the classic film “The Bridge on the River Kwai.” The incident that caused her death occurred around 1pm on Wednesday, when her family disembarked at the train stop in tambon Lumsum of Sai Yok district.

The woman rushed to disembark the train so she wouldn’t be left behind when her bag strap got caught on the train door handle and caused her to fall on the tracks. According to eyewitnesses, her head was crushed by the moving train.

Her husband, Andreas Liapis, immediately contacted the Greek Embassy in Bangkok. Local police are still investigating and expected to file an official report.
