A Greek from Venezuela Writes about Corruption and Poverty

The attempted rape of a young student in a university campus in San Cristobal in February caused a massive wave of protests and demonstrations by Venezuelans against insecurity due to high criminality, poverty, corruption in government and the police, censorship and manipulation of the media and violations of human rights.

Yannis Kouzinos, a Greek who lives in Caracas, Venezuela, published a letter about the major problems facing the Venezuelan people, and the demonstrations currently taking place. According to Kouzinos, criminality is the major problem. Each year some 25,000 deaths are recorded, while the number of people injured due to robberies or attempted rapes is double that. The most frequent criminal act is kidnapping for ransom. However, only 10% of these cases are solved.

Kouzinos believes that not only are the police unable to tackle criminality but they are also unwilling as the high criminality rate is a way to keep the country in a state of fear. Many police officials are also members of smuggling groups. Poverty and a lack of staple goods on market shelves are also some of the major reasons for the protests. Basic products like cooking oil, milk and sugar are very expensive and not always available, and people must wait in long queues in order to obtain them.”

Only wealthy people can afford the expensive imported products that meet their needs,” says Kouzinos. Fifteen people have lost their lives during the protests, and there is proof of severe police violence. “Venezuelans are not fighting for a better luxury car, as the media are trying to persuade the public in Greece,” says Kouzinos. “They are fighting because democracy and socialism never came to Venezuela” he concludes.
