Parthenon Marvels At Mexico Exhibit

mexico_message_of_hope_to_greeks_thumbArt lovers and Philhellenes in Mexico City will have the chance to witness the splendors of the Parthenon,  the emblematic monument for western culture, a symbol of architectural perfection and harmony, through the exhibition Parthenon: Architecture and Art (Partenon: Arquitectura y Arte).

The exhibition will be host in the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City, which constitutes the most important exhibit place of Latin America. It will run until Sept. 22.

The exhibition includes large-size photographs and smaller images of the restoration of the Parthenon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and symbol of Greek identity.

Photographic material and multimedia, as well as copies from the monument, are included, demonstrating the excellent work of Parthenon’s restoration in the last years, as an example of cultural heritage’s conservation.

The initiative for this organization belongs to the Greek Community of Mexico and in particular to Alexandros Apostolakis, archeologist, art historian, monuments’ restorer and board member of the Community. “We want to show Greek culture to the world and how art always overcomes human beings’ problems,” Apostolakis said.

The Greek Community aims at creating the conditions for the development of a Philhellenism movement and at redefining Greece’s image in a positive framework in Central America, as well as at giving a message of hope for the harsh moments the country is going through.

Apostolakis said that despite having little money, the organization was successful, as the Mexican audience was really enthusiastic during the exhibition’s inauguration.

He said he believes that the projection of Greek culture in Mexico is particularly weak and for that reason the Greek Community seeks a new, active and dynamic communication channel in order to fulfill its vision, which is to show the Greek cultural heritage abroad.
