Avramopoulos in Azerbaijan for Energy Cooperation

avramopoulosGreek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos will travel to the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku on April 29 for an official two-day visit.

The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev will receive Avramopoulos, who will meet with Azerbaijan’s Prime Minister, Artur Rasizadeh and will have talks with his counterpart, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

According to the Greek website Capital, the politicians will discuss bilateral political, economic and energy cooperation, as well as regional developments and EU-Azerbaijan relations ahead of Greece’s upcoming EU Presidency in the first half of 2014. A joint press conference and an official luncheon in Avramopoulos’ honor will follow.

Avramopoulos will also meet with Culture and Tourism Minister of Azerbaijan, Abulfas Garayev and with representatives of the Greek community in Azerbaijan.

“I believe that this visit is an excellent opportunity to further promote our bilateral relations – relations of friendship, trust and mutual respect – which are already at a high level. At the same time, we will continue our very important bilateral political dialogue, which we have been carrying out for many years now, to the benefit of both our peoples”, Avramopoulos stated during an interview with Azeri Press Agency.

When asked about the perspective of bilateral energy cooperation, Avramopoulos said: “Greece is one of the closest EU member states to Azerbaijan. It is one of the closest, most easily accessible gateways for Azerbaijan to the European markets. We want to work together with you and Azerbaijan is already exporting gas to Greece through Turkey, so we are already cooperating bilaterally in the energy sector.”

He added: “We want to expand this cooperation. Specifically, we want to do this through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), a project for a dedicated pipeline that would carry Azerbaijan’s natural gas to European markets via Greece, Albania and Italy – also supplying Southeast European markets along the way.”

Deputy Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister, Asimakis Papageorgiou will accompany Avramopoulos on his visit in Azerbaijan.
