Egypt Celebrates Greek Culture

The Greek Cultural Institute celebrated Egypt and Greece’s cultures with a cultural month in October, ending with a two-day tribute to Greek short films that were shown in Cairo and Alexandria.

Egypt is widely known for its short film festivals and events, including among others, the Shnit film festival and the upcoming Goethe Institute short film festival. The Greek films ranged from one to 20 minutes and featured dramas, comedies, romance and everything in between.

The Vice President of the Greek Cultural Institute in Cairo, Dina Constantina, said that, “Most of the films have been produced within the last five years, though some are older, and some have won prestigious awards. We chose these films because they are all famous in Greece and have been well-received. They all have English subtitles and some are silent with no dialogue at all.”

She also added that, “The tribute is part of the Greek Egyptian cultural month where we have featured crafts and art exhibitions, among other things.” Among others, the films included Moments of Wisdom, a story of a life in three minutes; The Son, a story of parents trying to answer their son’s difficult questions; Coat Fitting, about an old man who finds meaning in his life upon learning he may be the subject of a documentary, Occupation, and What Swims and Laughs. The cultural festivities ended in Alexandria, once a center of Greek culture in Egypt.
