Greece Οfficially Closes Embassy in Syrian Capital

The Greek Embassy in Damascus is suspending its operation from Thursday onwards due to the worsening of the security conditions in the war-plagued country. Syria has been in civil war for more than a year now and the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recommended to all Greeks to avoid traveling to Syria for any reason.

The relevant announcement of the Ministry noted, however, that the Honorary Consulates of Greece to Aleppo, Latakia and Tartus will continue to fully operate in order to provide the Greek citizens in Syria with any possible help required.

Furthermore, according to the Treaty of the EU, the five still operating embassies from the 27 Member-States in Syria will offer consular assistance and protection to Greek citizens.
