Greek-Canadian Singer Performs in Gala for Chinese New Year

The Mississauga Chinese Arts Organization (MCAO) rang in the Chinese New Year on Sunday with a gala featuring folk dances, singing and instrumental music.

The event, which took place at the Living Arts Centre, also featured performances by well-known Chinese singer Roy Cheng, a Mongolian female dance group and George Chairman Deas, a Greek-Canadian singer who is fluent in Chinese, Greek, Spanish, English, French, Hebrew and Russian. He also performed on the piano and on guitar, thus showcasing his numerous talents.

The event sought to share Chinese traditions with the larger community.

The official date of the Chinese New Year is January 23. The community will usher in the Year of the Dragon, traditionally considered the “mightiest” of all the Chinese Zodiac signs. In the Chinese culture, the dragon symbolizes good fortune and strength.

The MCAO is a non-profit group founded in 2005 that promotes Chinese culture and multiculturalism through its shows, most notably the Mississauga Chinese Arts Festival, staged every summer.
