Greek Performer Yianni Adopts Panda!

Greek musician Yanni has adopted a female baby panda from the Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base in Southwest China.

Officials from the research base invited the musician to adopt the animal, saying their decision was made from the inspiration and harmony that derives from his music.

“I accept this gift and this honor with great humility and a profound sense of responsibility towards the country of China”, Yianni stated.

The singer added he had named the panda ‘Santorini’ after a scenic island in Greece and the word derived from the Greek word for ‘peace’.

“Santorini includes the word ‘irini’, which in Greek language, means ‘peace'”, he said.

The mother of the baby panda is Mao Mao, who has served as a model for one of the five mascots, ‘Jingjing’, of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
