Lebanon: Greek Embassy donates books on art, culture, archeology

The Greek Embassy donated to AUB 19 books on Greek art, archeology, and civilization, during a visit by Greek Ambassador Panos Kalogeropoulos (photo) on July 27, 2010.
“Everyone knows the benefits AUB has brought to the life and culture of Lebanon and the region,” said Kalogeropoulos as he delivered the collection to AUB President Peter Dorman.
“Many Greek students have studied here such as the former Minister for Development Christos Folias (AUB, Economics 1975). This is a small token of appreciation to the mission of AUB that resists all adversity and brings light to this part of the world,” he added.

In addition to Dorman, the event was attended by AUB Archeological Museum Director Leila Badr, Assistant Vice President for Development Imad Baalbaki, AUB Provost Ahmad Dallal, and Himat Beaini, the director of the Office of Information and Public Relations.
President Dorman thanked Kalogeropoulos for this generous offer. “It is wonderful to have books like this come to our university,” he said.
The books were donated to the embassy by the Onassis Foundation, noted the Ambassador. The Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation was established in 1975 and aims to promote Greek culture and civilization throughout the world. Donating books is an ongoing project of both the foundation and the Greek Embassy, which have also contributed books to the Safadi Foundation in Tripoli and the ALBA University.
Some of the book titles that were donated included: From Ishtar to Aphrodite: 3200 years of Cypriot Hellenism, Alexander the Great, The Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, The Origins of El Greco, and Hagia Sophia: The church of the holy wisdom of God.
“They are of historic and aesthetic value”, said the ambassador.
An exhibition of the books will take place at the Jafet Library to introduce students to the new additions before they become a permanent part of AUB’s book collection.
