Police in Thailand say at least thirty-one people have been killed in a mass shooting at a nursery in a northeastern province of the country.

Police said at least twenty-three children are among the victims. They said the gunman was a former police officer.

Local media reported that the attacker then committed suicide and killed his family.

The gunman Panya Kamrab was sacked from the force last year, Thai PBS reported. They quoted a local police colonel Jakkapat Vijitraithaya who said Kamrab had been dismissed for substance abuse.

The shooting took place in the Na Klang district of the province of Nong Bua Lamphu and occurred in the afternoon local time while children at the center were sleeping.

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Thailand although gun ownership is high in the region.
