“The Greeks of Egypt have offered much to the homeland. It is our duty to preserve and strengthen the presence of the Greek element, in these ancestral homes of Hellenism”, stated Mr. Samaras.

It is worth noting that in his term as Foreign Minister he showed interest in saving the house of Cavafy in Alexandria, which is currently a museum and a benchmark of Hellenism in the city.

“We want to keep Hellenism alive; we are not asking anything from the Greek state, apart from a guarantee that Averofeion Greek High School will remain exclusively Greek. We are ready to offer help in action, founding an orphanage to offer a warm embrace to Greek children, especially now that existing institutions in Greece are facing so many problems. We will undertake all costs and tuition fees so as to establish the new generation of Greeks in Alexandria”, stated Mr. Siokas.

The nature and type of stances adopted by Greek – Egyptian scholars, from the moment they were confronted with the cultural movements of modern Egypt up to the interwar period, is addressed by a book titled “Time to modernize. Egypt and the Greek – Egyptian intelligentsia, 1919, 1939” by the director of the Alexandria branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, Manolis Maragoulis.

The book, dedicated in memory of Costis Moskov, analyzes the terms and conditions under which community intellect was developed amid the vast cultural melting pot of Egypt, not primarily aimed at confirming its Greek character.

Moving his research forward beyond Cavafy and Tsirkas, two of the most significant figures of Hellenism in Egypt, on whom studies up until this point have been primarily focused, the author seeks encounters between the Egyptian and Greek tradition in a broad spectrum of texts produced by the Greek – Egyptian intelligentsia.

Manolis Maragoulis has published – among others – several studies in Greek and Arabic scientific and literary journals, focusing on ideological movements and the literary production of Greeks in Egypt from the last quarter of the 19th century to the 20th century interwar period.

The book, published by Gutenberg Publications and Cyprus University Press, will be presented on Thursday, December 22nd in Thessaloniki at P. Kyriakidis Bookstore.

Following a number of efforts by the Greek authorities in Egypt and the Foreign Ministry, in cooperation with the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, a Greek seaman, Nikos Papafotis, who has been detained in Egypt due to a matter concerning the guarding of a Greek-flagged vessel since February 2009, returned to Greece on Friday.

Mr. Papafotis had been appointed by the Egyptian Ministry of Justice as the legal guardian of the “Nikolas A.” vessel, which was ordered to drop anchor at Safaga Port in South Red Sea due to pending legal claims.

The Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Cairo issued an official announcement, according to which this case proved to be one of the most complicated in terms of the Sea Law. The numerous legal impediments that emerged over the years rendered the negotiations extremely long and difficult.

However, the longtime adventure of the Greek seaman has finally come to a happy end. Greek diplomatic authorities had managed to let the man get off the vessel by October 2010 and wait for the final legal decision allowing him to return to Athens, Greece.

Abstract compositions of mixed media on paper, paintings that boast a skilled approach to composition, and a beautiful mixing of pencil and paint; the graphite swirls in a sketch-like movement, as though the artist Yorgos Papageorgiou starts off with a quick vague idea of what he wants to portray, only for it to be cemented through the use of paint.

The compositions vary from grid-like breakdown of the support to more organic lines across it.

The 58-year-old Greek artist, who has been living in Cairo since 2010, had studied physics and material science, and previously worked as a researcher in France. He only started studying Fine Arts in 1994 at the Atelier Toma Roata in Brussels, Belgium, and his first exhibition was there in 1998. He then later moved to Beijing, China from 2005 to 2010.

Papageorgiou has been living in cities that are undergoing major transformations in their social and artistic expression, and it seems that his late blooming in the arts has greatly benefited from this. It is perhaps due to this mature approach to the arts that his work lacks a lot of the pretentiousness that can be seen in the younger, artistically trained contemporary artists. Artists, and viewers alike, will surely enjoy this exhibition.

Pavlos Geroulanos was received by his Egyptian counterpart Munir Fakhry Abdel Nour on Sunday in Cairo, where they agreed to make an effort for stronger cooperation in tourism between Greece and Egypt.

The two countries aim to work together to attract visitors from rapidly developing tourism markets such as China, India and Latin America. Geroulanos emphasised that tourists from these countries place great emphasis on archaeological tourism and that in this area the two countries could be partners.

Egypt is the third country in the region that Greece is seeking to cooperate with in tourism, after Turkey, and Israel.

To promote this effort, the two ministers decided to organise a tourism-related forum for businesses, hopefully in the very near future.

The Associate Professor at the University of Athens Xenofon Mousas will give a talk on ”Antikythera Mechanism, the First Mechanical Universe and Computer”.

Nefertiti Megahed, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cairo will talk about ”Maths in the Mediterranean: Egypt and Greece”.

Dr. Flora Vafea will focus on Αstrolabe (astronomical instrument that locates and predicts the position of stars and planets).

The exhibition will contribute in a more global presentation of the topic, which designates the relations between Greek and Egyptian civilizations; two civilizations that were developed around the Mediterranean Sea.

At the end of talks, another topic related to the photograph exhibition will be inaugurated. The presentation includes photographs of the Antikythera Mechanism, accompanied by short texts in Greek and Arabic.

The Antikythera Mechanism, is one of the most globally important discoveries of the Antiquity. It is the oldest known complex scientific calculator, as well as astronomical clock and planetarium. It is considered to be one of the most advanced astronomical clocks discovered in Europe, especially after the 14th century.

It was maintained for 23 centuries at the bottom of the sea and was discovered in a shipwreck, in Antikythera by Symian divers around 1901-1902. The ship carried priceless treasures from Greece to Rome. Today, the Antikythera Mechanism can be found in the Archaelogical Museum of Athens.

The exhibition was designated by Xenofon Mousas, Member of the International Mechanism Study group, the results of which are based the reconstructions in computers and cartoon films, as presented in the exhibition.

The exhibition presents the evolution of Greek astronomy and astrophysics, which became a real science in Greece due to the use of appropriate maths and physics that allow the comprehension, interpretation and prediction of astronomics through evolving mathematical models.

The exhibition will be presented in Greece, Cyprus and many more countries around the world.

Dates of exhibition: June 8th to September 30th, 2011

Hours of visit: Monday to Thursday, 9.30 – 21.00

Friday, 9.30 – 15.00
