Greek Students Stand Out in Astronomy Olympiad

The Greek team claimed third place in the 9th International Olympiad of Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOOA).

High school students Antonis Valmas of Anavryta Experimental High School won the bronze medal while Girogos Papaxatzakis 2nd Mantoulidi Institutions Thessaloniki High School received an honorable mention.

The games were held in Java, Indonesia from July 27 until August 3 and included 318 students from 41 countries from Asia, Europe, North and South America. Distinguished high school students in astronomy and astrophysics from all around the world can participate in the games.

“The stages in the competition comprise of four rounds of theory test, observation, data management and team competition. The awarding of medals will be decided upon the scoring on theory test, observation and data management, while team competition will determine the awardee of the best team of IOAA,” the IOOA website notes.

A student from Iran won the gold medal this year. Next year’s Olympiad will take place in India.
