Greek CNN Producer Injured in Sao Paulo

barbara arvanitidisGreek CNN producer, Barbara Arvanitidis and two other CNN journalists were injured during clashes in Sao Paulo, Brazil between police forces and people protesting against the World Cup tournament earlier today. The Greek journalist was injured by a canister and she received first aid by BBC’s correspondent, Wyre Davies.

Arvanitidis is a mother of two girls and has worked as a journalist in major news agencies,  including the BBC and ITN. She speaks English, Portuguese, French and Greek and she is passionate about her work.  Before moving to Brazil she lived in London for 15 years.

The Brazilian riot police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades on protesters in Sao Paulo just hours before the openning ceremony of the World Cup in the city.  Brazilians protesting against public funds being spent on the World Cup 2014, have taken the streets around the stadium where the opening ceremonyis to be held.   It is estimated that the Brazilian government has spent about 6.7 billion dollars for the tournament’s preparations, while millions of people in the country live in poverty.

According to local media, the protesters have announced that they will hold more demonstrations in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and five other Brazilian cities.
