At least eight Mumbai policemen are among 29 individuals whose bank cards were cloned and used to fraudulently withdraw cash from ATM machines in Greece, a Mumbai police official said Friday.
A total of 1.3 million rupees ($23,000) was withdrawn from 29 accounts with Axis Bank Ltd., said Satyanarayan Chaudhary, deputy commissioner of police at Mumbai’s crime branch.
Axis Bank reported the fraudulent withdrawals to Mumbai police on Friday, said Mr. Chaudhary.
Axis Bank manages the salary accounts of Mumbai police, and ATMs frequented by policemen in the south Mumbai neighborhoods of Worli and Colaba were used to clone the cards, according to an Axis Bank spokesman.
It’s unclear why the withdrawals were made in Greece.
ATM cloning, or skimming, is a growing problem globally. It involves thieves attaching devices on ATM machines to copy the number of a credit or debit card, and capture the information about a customer’s account that is embedded on the magnetic strip of the cards.
