Greek PM Samaras to Visit China

antonis samaras Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will pay an official visit to China on May 15-19, according to sources.

Samaras is likely to be the second European leader of state that will meet with the Chinese government following the French President Francois Hollande’s visit on April 25.

The Greek PM intends to attract investments in Greece through his contacts abroad. His visit to Beijing aims at boosting bilateral ties and promoting Greece as a tourism destination to the Chinese market, according to the newspaper Kathimerini.

Samaras will meet with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang on May 16 and with the Chinese President Xi Jinping the following day. The Greek PM will be accompanied by businessmen on his trip to China.

The agenda of his talks reportedly includes the program of Greece’s big ports’ denationalization, as big Asian business groups have expressed their interest in transferring their products to Piraeus port.

Samaras will visit the industrial city of Hangzhou, in China’s eastern Zhejiang province, to meet with entrepreneurs.

The Chinese state television is reportedly planning to launch a new television series called Glamorous Greece, promoting Greek archaeological sites and other destinations which hopefully will boost the crucial tourism sector.

Samaras stated on April 25 that “recovery is in sight”, referring to Greece’s economy that he insisted is already rebounding.
