Ancient Greek Harbor Found Near Israel

Four 19th-Century warships and supposedly the remains of an ancient Greek harbor were found by archaeologists off the Israeli coast, according to a research team.

The research team discovered the wrecks in the ancient port of Akko, one of the great importance ports in the Mediterranean during the Hellenistic period. The discoveries could point to even more ancient, elusive shipwrecks.

“These ships were incredible pieces of technology, but we don’t know much about their design, because no hulls have been found,” Bridget Buxton, an archaeologist from the University of Rhode Island, (URI) said.

Wood from the ship came from Turkey, laboratory analysis showed. As cited by Live Science, analysts said they believe the four ships might have been part of the Egyptian fleet from the Egyptian-Ottoman war.

During excavations, reseachers found other artifacts dating in the Hellenistic era such as ancient pottery, mooring materials and a stone quay. These fragments suggest a much older, ancient Greek port may lie beneath the seafloor — along with even more ancient shipwrecks. The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research on Nov. 15 and 17 in Chicago.
