Dubai-based Paper Reports that “Greek Police Evict Immigrants From Athens”

The Greek state is making efforts to control illegal immigration in Greece and as a result, it is collaborating with European service Frontex to find a solution.

Dubai-based Khaleej Times newspaper reported that “Greek police announced Saturday the launch of an operation two days earlier to evict undocumented immigrants from central Athens as tensions rise over immigration in the debt-choked country.”

Especially due to upheaval in Syria, Greek police are making efforts to prevent more refugees from entering the country illegally. For those already established in Greece, once they get arrested for not having documents, Greek police officers send them back either to their native countries or to special centres in northern Greece.

“But as the country struggles with a crippling economic crisis and sweeping austerity cuts, social tensions are on the rise and the increase in undocumented immigrants has fueled xenophobia and racist attacks,” stresses the reporter and it is a totally true statement. Some Greek people, especially those having voted for the Greek far-right party, express their anger against immigrants. At the same time, extremist parties and organizations are making assaults on immigrants in downtown Athens.
