Greek Arrested at Mexico City Airport on Drug Charges

A Greek national was arrested at the Mexico City airport for allegedly trying to smuggle more than half a kilo of cocaine on a flight bound for Greece with a stopover in Madrid, the Public Safety Secretariat said.
Charonitis Zacharias was detained on Friday when an X-ray inspection turned up the drugs in his modified suitcase, the secretariat said.

Zacharias, who had checked in the suitcase for the flight on a Spanish carrier, presented authorities with his Greek passport and said he was heading to Heraklion, Greece.
Customs agents opened the suitcase in the presence of a representative of the federal Attorney General’s Office and found two packets of a white powder in the false bottom.
The powder, which weighed 650 grams, tested positive for cocaine and was the “equivalent of 1,300 doses of drugs,” the secretariat said.
Zacharias and his property were turned over to the agent from the AG’s office, which will conduct the investigation and determine whether to prosecute the suspect on drug charges.
