Greece’s Ambassador Theodore Georgakelos celebrated 11 years of continuous teaching of the Greek language in China at a two-day forum in the library of Peking University.
He noted that many Chinese Hellenists, university professors, and friends of Greece and its civilization came from other universities all over China, including Tsinghua, Renmin, Nankai and Fudanand the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences.
The forum addressed ancient Greek and Byzantine history and philosophy, ancient drama, ancient and modern Greek language teaching and translations of Greek authors into Chinese.
Last week’s forum was organized by the Center for Hellenic Studies of Peking University and the embassy of Greece in Beijing, under the auspices of the Peking University Center for ClassicalStudies.
Georgakelos paid tribute to many people who promoted Greek studies in China more than a decade ago, including among others the sponsor Captain Vassilis Konstantakopoulos, the then Vice-Rector of Peking University and current Vice-Minister of Education in China Hao Ping, and the then Ambassador of China in Greece, Yang Guansheng. The embassy presented a special tablet to to 40 Chinese professors for their love of Greek civilization and Greek language.
