Why Immigrants from Third-World Countries Prefer Cyprus

Research was recentlycarried out for the Civil Registry and Migration Department of the Ministry of Interior by Marketway company, in cooperation with Pulse Market Research company and co-financed by the EU Funds of Solidarity and Management of Migration Flows (2007-2013 period) and the Republic of Cyprus.

According to the research, the most vulnerable groups of immigrants in Cyprus are groups of people facing serious financial problems, people at risk of social exclusion due to racism, and people whose children are at risk of exclusion from school.

Among other problems, people coming from third-world countries face language problems, difficulties in accessing health services as well as racial discrimination.

The immigrants themselves propose to assist the process of their integration into the Cypriot society, via actions related to the improvement of economic earnings and by finding better working conditions and job opportunities that can enhance their lives.

The experts involved in the research (Roman Braska, Panayiotis Panayiotou and the scientific collaborator of the project, Professor Christos Panagiotopoulos), suggest the involvement of immigrants in decision-making regarding the design of immigration policy, especially at a local level.

More specifically, they proposed to increase the cultural and political participation of immigrants in the host society, to strengthen the dialogue between different immigrant groups, government and civil society, and to provide advisory services on various levels for immigrants.

Other suggestions are to encourage discussion and exchange of experiences among immigrant groups and local residents, to facilitate the participation of immigrants in key organizations of the country through voluntary programs, to support immigrant organizations, to provide counseling to newly arrived immigrants, and to promote national programs of civic education for immigrants.
